XPeng launches humanoid robot production line as IRON walks off autonomously
On Tuesday, XPeng announced that its automated production line for humanoid robots had commenced operations. The first IRON robot completed automated final assembly and walked off the line by itself, signaling the company's transition from research and development to mass production.
XPeng stated that IRON is the world's first high-level general-purpose humanoid robot produced on an automated assembly line.
The production line, designed and built by XPeng's own team, integrates manufacturing and quality-control systems originally developed for the automotive industry. These systems have been adapted to meet the precision and flexibility required for humanoid robot assembly, and XPeng noted that over 80% of the line's core processes are automated.
The commercialization of humanoid robots is still in its infancy, with most products far from large-scale production and assembly processes still heavily dependent on manual labor.
Automated production lines hold the potential to boost manufacturing efficiency and ensure consistent product quality, while also providing a basis for scaling up output. However, because humanoid robots comprise numerous precision components and complex mechanical systems, automotive manufacturing techniques cannot be applied wholesale. The actual efficiency and cost-effectiveness of mass production remain to be verified.
In the context of this sector, IRON falls under XPeng's Physical AI strategy and is positioned as a general-purpose robot. The company intends to establish a unified hardware and software platform that enables the robot to function in diverse real-world settings and accomplish a broad array of tasks.
IRON features a fully enclosed flexible lattice structure and 76 degrees of freedom, including 21 in its hands. Equipped with three Turing AI chips, it delivers up to 2,250 TOPS of effective computational power, according to XPeng.
XPeng says its physical AI model can operate entirely on the robot, enabling it to perceive its surroundings and perform tasks without remote human control. Under the current product roadmap, scaled production of IRON is expected by the end of 2026, with commercial deliveries beginning in 2027. Initially, the robot will be deployed for dangerous and highly repetitive tasks before expanding to broader real-world applications.
XPeng has simultaneously intensified efforts to commercialize its robotics division. The company recently closed its first external funding round for the robotics business, raising over $900 million at a post-money valuation exceeding $6.3 billion.
The funding round was led by IDG Capital, with participation from Gaorong Capital, and strategic investments from Tencent and Alibaba. XPeng Group will maintain control of the robotics business.
He Xiaopeng, CEO of XPeng, said the company aims to bring humanoid robots to real-world environments in the near future. He described XPeng's robots as "more human-like and safer," featuring no need for remote control, natural interaction capabilities, and their own memory. Crucially, he emphasized that the goal is not to create robots for demonstrations, but to build products that deliver genuine value and can be mass-produced.
