Maven Robotics Raises $100M as Wheeled Warehouse Robots Outpace Bipedal Hype

On Sept. 10, Maven Robotics announced a $100 million Series A round. The company was founded in 2024, and co-founder Hamza Derbas told TechCrunch that in its early days it had only “a cartoon drawing of a robot and a team.”

That modest starting point looks less like a limitation and more like a deliberate strategy. Maven did not begin with a humanoid showcase; it began with a warehouse problem.

Two years later, eight Maven robots are working 16 hours a day at a Fortune 250 consumer-goods company’s warehouse, with uptime above 99%. Their job is mixed palletizing: recombining boxed goods from different factories into pallets for different retail stores, a process that still relies on workers walking the floor to pick items one by one.

The robots are not visually striking. They use a wheeled base, two arms, a top speed of 10 mph, and one arm can lift 30 kg. There is no bipedal counterintuitive beauty, no dancing or backflip tricks. Derbas said bipedal design is “meaningless for anything they are doing... very complex, unreliable, and adds unnecessary cost. ROI is key.” The barbed line is being validated by the bet.

Maven’s $100 million first round came from RoboStrategy, LocalGlobe, Vine Ventures, and XTX Markets Ventures. RoboStrategy investor Jack Pearson, who led the round, offered a sharper judgment: the general robotics field has a huge gap between “robots that demo well” and “robots that survive seven days a week, three shifts a day.”

Maven’s path runs opposite most humanoid companies. While Figure, 1X, and Apptronik chase bipedal general capability, Maven pinned itself to the warehouse floor from day one. Its robots do not try to replace the whole person; they replace the most boring, repetitive, least “general” part of physical labor.

The labor data supports this route. U.S. manufacturing has more than 480,000 open jobs, and by 2030 a skills gap is projected to leave 2.1 million positions unfilled. Manufacturing JOLTS openings reached 529,000 in April 2026 and continue climbing. Yet hiring rates are falling and quits remain low at 1.9%; workers are not moving, and factories cannot fill roles. Automation is not an alternative; it is the only way out.

The funding backdrop also aligns. Global robotics startup funding has reached $18.8 billion so far in 2026, surpassing 2025’s full-year $15 billion and 2021’s peak of $14.1 billion. PitchBook data show robotics and physical AI startups raised a record $18.6 billion in Q2 2026 alone. Money is pouring in, but its direction is diverging: defense and autonomy software absorbed the largest single rounds, while logistics and warehousing funding fell 68% from Q1.

That means Maven’s $100 million, in a subsector temporarily out of favor with capital, may allow it to run more focused. Maven’s plan is pragmatic: use the funds to produce 250 third-generation robots while starting design of a fourth-generation platform. The company expects cumulative autonomous operating time to exceed 100,000 hours by the end of 2026 and 1 million hours by the end of 2027.

Those hours will feed its training pipeline, collecting information from real operations to train more complex material-handling capabilities and then move into assembly scenarios. But the ceiling is also clear. A wheeled base is efficiency-optimal in warehouses and distribution centers; on assembly lines requiring flexible work, its mobility freedom becomes a hard constraint. Maven acknowledges its next stage—from palletizing to more complex material handling and assembly—requires robot manipulation capabilities that do not yet exist.

Maven’s bet is to first achieve scale through quantifiable ROI, use scale to gain data, use data to gain capability, and finally build truly general robots. Humanoid companies bet on building general capability first and then finding deployment scenarios. Who reaches the threshold of the endgame first depends on a more fundamental question: does the generality of general-purpose robots evolve from specialized tasks, or must it be designed in from the start? Maven has no answer. It has only bought a ticket to keep betting with $100 million.
