Optimus Supplier Audits in Ningbo as Humanoid Market Seen at $200B
Tesla sent its supplier audit team to Ningbo on 16 September, reviewing almost entirely automotive parts makers such as Tuopu and Sanhua, ahead of a 2026 Optimus production plan. Barclays separately estimates the humanoid market could reach USD 200 billion within a decade, with China already holding 85 percent of global deployments.
Capital is concentrating at compute and perception. D-Robotics, spun out of Horizon Robotics, closed a USD 400 million Series C led by Mirae Asset, taking disclosed funding past USD 770 million for its Sunrise chips and robot software. Zeno Robotics, founded in 2025, raised a multi-hundred-million-yuan seed round with Sunny Optical and MetaX. The audited Ningbo suppliers sit at the opposite end of the same chain, in joints and actuators.
Model-layer evidence is accumulating. Figure reported Helix 2.5 running four consecutive hours across 30 homes without retraining, indicating one vision-language-action model transfers to unseen households. Booster Robotics showed its T2 spotting out-of-place objects on watch duty. Blue Bug Embodied priced its modular Xiaobai humanoid from 9,800 yuan, about an order of magnitude below typical quotations, compressing hardware margin and pushing value toward software and data.
Ownership is shifting. SoftBank agreed to acquire the Robotics and AI Institute from Hyundai, a deal under CFIUS review that returns Marc Raibert's venture to Japanese control. UBTECH exhibited Europe's first Walker C1 in Slovenia. EPFL researchers proposed Sustainability Robotics, scoring robots by contribution to sustainability goals rather than task performance alone.
Two points to observe. First, whether Ningbo supplier qualification converts into 2026 volume, since the audited names being auto parts makers implies joints and actuators are the binding constraint. Second, whether generalist models combined with sub-10,000-yuan hardware move the value pool from mechanical integration to data and software.
