NDRC: Future Industries Must Be Tailored to Local Conditions, Not 'All-Encompassing'
The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) held a press conference in its 'Striving for the 15th Five-Year Plan' series to brief on cultivating and strengthening new growth drivers. Ren Zhongbao, deputy director of the Department of Innovation and High-Tech Development, noted that unlike previous technological revolutions, the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation features multi-point breakthroughs, group breakthroughs, and cross-integration, giving rise to numerous future industry directions. Therefore, developing future industries cannot be 'all-encompassing,' he said.
Ren stated that the Party Central Committee and the State Council, after comprehensively assessing future technological trends, China's industrial and technological foundations, and future economic and social development needs, explicitly proposed focusing on quantum technology, biomanufacturing, hydrogen and nuclear fusion energy, brain-computer interfaces, embodied intelligence, and sixth-generation mobile communications during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. He emphasized the need to strengthen overall planning under a nationwide coordinated approach and support localities in choosing subdivisions with local foundations and comparative advantages. This approach aims to avoid redundant investment and foster differentiated development across regions as China prepares its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030).
