Universal Robots Unveils Gen 7 Platform to Bring Physical AI to Factory Floors

Universal Robots (UR), the pioneer of collaborative robots (cobots), has unveiled its Gen 7 platform at the IMTS trade show in Chicago. This marks the company's most significant underlying architecture overhaul in years.

The Gen 7 launch is not a simple patch but a complete rebuild from scratch. It encompasses new g-Series robotic arms, redesigned controllers, and a next-generation operating system, aiming to resolve the integration pain points that have long plagued AI-driven automation.

UR's goal is clear: to make "Physical AI" transition from a laboratory research project to tangible productivity on factory floors. With over 100,000 cobots deployed globally, UR bets on a core logic—even as automation tasks become unprecedentedly complex, ease of use remains the hard currency of the industrial world.

Jean-Pierre Hathout, president of Teradyne Robotics, UR's parent company, stated: "Robots in the AI era must be advanced, but they should not be complicated."

On the hardware front, the Gen 7 platform precisely targets the pain points of compact factory spaces and messy cabling. The new CB7 Core controller delivers 40% more computing power while shrinking its volume by 30%, a major boon for production lines where space is at a premium.

More breakthrough: the new g-Series arms feature an "AI-ready" tool flange. It integrates power (24/48V), high-speed data interfaces (1Gb Ethernet), and safety I/O directly at the wrist. For engineers who once struggled to install external cables for vision systems, this is a "lifesaver." This highly integrated design provides native support for the high-bandwidth sensors required for real-time AI processing, ending the era of cluttered add-ons.

On the software ecosystem, UR also shows a strong open posture. The new PolyScope X operating system natively supports ROS 2. As the "lingua franca" of the robotics research community, ROS 2, combined with open APIs, is like an olive branch extended to global AI developers, inviting them to build applications directly on UR's hardware foundation and achieve seamless migration from algorithm models to production lines. Partner Inbolt has already demonstrated a vision system running directly on the new controller, completely eliminating the need for an additional PC.
