Guterres Warns of AI Dystopia in Final UN General Assembly Address

UN Secretary-General António Guterres renewed calls for stronger artificial intelligence regulation on Tuesday, warning that unchecked corporate power and the spread of “killer robots” could produce a dystopian future. In his final address to world leaders at the UN General Assembly, Guterres said the rapid development of frontier AI models risks eroding the authority of nation-states.

He urged the international community to agree on new AI safety safeguards, arguing that the technology's trajectory demands urgent collective action. Guterres said the world is witnessing an extraordinary shift of power from governments to a handful of private companies and individuals. He added that AI is advancing at a breathtaking speed, outpacing humanity's ability to understand its full consequences, according to Bloomberg.

The warning reflects growing global concern that frontier AI systems are being deployed faster than governments can regulate them.
