Wang Xingxing Moves Embodied AI GPT Moment to 'Possibly Next Year'
Unitree founder Wang Xingxing has narrowed the expected arrival of embodied AI's GPT moment to possibly next year, his third revision in six months. China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security added embodied AI robot application technician to its official profession list, with duties covering robot training. The two facts set the near-term clock and the labor-market infrastructure for the sector.
The timing claim rests on the 80/20 data assumption, under which a small share of real-world data unlocks general capability. If that assumption holds, model usability moves from laboratory to deployment sooner than previously guided. D-Robotics and GigaAI will place a world model and embodied foundation model on edge AI compute, a route that lowers power and cost for real robots. Tashi Tech and Richard Sutton's Openmind opened a robot kindergarten in Beijing, testing whether reinforcement-learning exploration can be organized at scale.
Hardware economics remain the binding constraint. Electronic skin demand is forecast at 1.525 million square meters by 2030, a market near 27.4 billion yuan, after orders including 13,000 bionic skin units in June. Fitting a full robot with skin currently costs over 5,000 yuan, framing the cost curve suppliers must bend. At the 2026 World Robot Conference, humanoids moved from dance to chores and food service, but experts said generalization remains the bottleneck. The gap between scripted demos and open-ended tasks decides commercial rollout.
Capital and manufacturing are repositioning around deployment. Foxconn and Alter formed a robotics joint venture with 45% stakes each and 50 million yuan in registered capital, indicating contract manufacturing capacity moving toward dedicated robot ventures. Hesai Technology and JD.com formed a strategic partnership to apply high-precision 3D perception to unmanned logistics and robotics. In deep-sea robotics, three deals in three months saw investors weight payload and operating economics over dive depth.
Two observation points follow. First, whether the 80/20 data assumption yields verifiable generalization gains. Second, whether the new national job classification becomes training standards and hiring volume. Edge deployment of world models and falling sensor costs will determine how quickly robots leave staged demonstrations. Policy and capital are now moving faster than demonstrated generality.
