Shenyang Manufacturing Goes Lightweight: Local Robots Take Center Stage
Marking the conclusion of the third Shenyang Manufacturing Economic and Trade Activity Week on September 6, 2026, the event showcased both massive industrial achievements and a new wave of agility. While heavyweights like the 1.8-million-ton ethylene production unit and compressed-air energy storage systems dominated the exhibition floor, the attention shifted to a cohort of locally developed, lightweight robots. These robots are capable of traversing complex terrain while carrying substantial loads, executing welding tasks adapted to the needs of small and medium enterprises, and even performing moxibustion by automatically locating acupuncture points.
More importantly, these products have already moved beyond the prototype stage, embedding themselves into real-world operations across various sectors. This shift underscores a fundamental transformation underway in Shenyang's manufacturing landscape—a deliberate pivot from heavy industry to a more versatile, user-focused approach.
At the booth of Huogou Xiyi Intelligent Technology, a heavy-duty quadruped robot dog drew large crowds. Self-weighting 75 kilograms, the robot can carry payloads ranging from 60 to 100 kilograms and operate continuously for up to 34 hours. By swapping out functional modules, it becomes an inspection robot or an emergency response assistant. Company head Hong Jinling noted that the robot has already been deployed in demanding settings such as tunnel blasting, effectively substituting human labor in hazardous operations.
Shenyang Hualei Laser introduced a collaborative welding robot aimed at addressing the pain points of small and medium manufacturers. Sales manager Wang Yingshuang said that the team leverages local advantages in fixture design and process engineering to deliver welding solutions that SMEs can easily adopt and directly use. While the company continues to strengthen its presence in the Northeast market, it is also launching an outward expansion to tap into international opportunities.
On the more cross-disciplinary end, Shenyang Tianren Heyi Technology showcased an intelligent moxibustion device that automatically locates acupuncture points. Equipped with a smoke purification system and burn-protection features, the device raises its head when a hand approaches, ensuring safety. According to Wei Shu, assistant to the company's president, the device has entered clinical application at several hospitals, and a home-use version is under development.
These pragmatic innovations are nurtured by Shenyang's industrial depth. Years of manufacturing expertise, a skilled workforce, and a complete supply chain provide fertile ground for product development. Continuous government-supported 'smart transformation' initiatives have lowered the barriers for creating intelligent equipment. Moreover, the city itself offers abundant living and production scenarios that serve as testing grounds for new technology.
The city's exhibition strategy has also evolved from a sales fair to a collaborative hub. A spokesperson from the Shenyang Municipal Commerce Bureau explained that exhibitions are now intended to be 'industrial magnets' that connect value chains. Many firms are no longer aiming only for on-site transactions but are seeking upstream and downstream partnerships and market expansion into Northeast China. For instance, Jiangsu Dige Machine Tools used its debut to display an electro-hydraulic servo bending machine, aiming to build brand awareness. Shenzhen Shenpu Electric engaged with local chains and has already set up operations in Shenyang. Statistics from the event show that three dedicated matchmaking sessions generated purchase intention agreements worth 935 million yuan, while the 24th China International Equipment Manufacturing Expo, held both online and offline, recorded 7.19 billion yuan in intended transactions.
Shenyang is home to three national-level advanced manufacturing clusters: aviation, machine tools, and robotics and intelligent manufacturing. Its comprehensive industrial ecosystem, expansive Northeast market, and improving business climate create a natural draw for outside suppliers.
As these lightweight, adaptable robots increasingly become the face of Shenyang's manufacturing, they are reshaping the city's innovation reputation. Though their scale might be small, they represent a path that is more flexible, open, and attuned to market needs.
