Company Research Report: HokMind and the Price of a Bionic Face

WHY READ

Why read: a bionic face costs CNY 170,000 to 1m, about 1.6 to 9 per cent of one large show's box office. The ceiling is set not by a technology narrative but by whether the same face-making process can be reused.

Abstract

HokMind was registered in Beijing in March 2026 and brought two machines to the World Robot Conference five months later, one standing full-body unit and one desktop bust. The one product unit that public sources allow us to verify is a bionic face with 32 degrees of freedom. Official copy promises facial expression and upper-body movement, and no official material mentions walking. The question that decides the company's direction is whether the process behind that face can be reused for the next customer.

1. Findings

In August 2026, in a hall of the World Robot Conference in Yizhuang, Beijing, a company less than six months old displayed two machines: a standing humanoid and a bust set on a table. The crowd in front of the booth was visibly larger than the staff working it. A Reuters photographer took a profile shot of one unit and captioned it "a nearly unknown Beijing startup" 12The robots that can pass for humanReuters photo · 22 August 2026View the entry below →.

The company is HokMind, registered in Beijing in March 2026. In June it added a Chengdu subsidiary for algorithms and a Langfang subsidiary for manufacturing and quality control, the latter inside an industrial park in Dachang 30HokMind company page, ZhaopinZhaopin · 2026View the entry below →34HokMind Langfang subsidiaryGasgoo · 2026View the entry below →.

The one unit that public sources allow us to verify is a bionic face. According to a distributor's product page, the face carries 32 degrees of freedom with gaze tracking and bionic skin, sits above a movable upper body, and the complete unit weighs 50 kg 6HokMind Primal M1 and F1 product page, Hope-RobotHope-Robot · 2026View the entry below →. The phrase the company uses is "physical expressiveness". The craft effort goes into visual credibility: freckles, dimples, visible veins, and the catchlight in the eyes that video clips keep freezing on 35Concert stand-in seen at the World Robot ConferenceChina Business Network · 19 August 2026View the entry below →. One question decides where this goes: whether the same face-making process can be reused for the next customer. If it can, the company has the makings of a product business. If every order starts from a new mould, its ceiling is set by lead time and headcount, and technology does not move that ceiling.

2. Demand: settings and market size

2.1 Who the use cases involve

Three kinds of settings need a person who can appear. Performance venues use the unit as a stand-in, a character or a stage prop, and the producer pays for an appearance. Brand and commercial spaces want a unit that stays at one point for months, handling reception, explanation and photographs. Culture and tourism sites care about continuous operation and maintainability 15Bionic robots push toward human likeness21st Century Business Herald · 3 July 2026View the entry below →.

On 21 August 2026, at the Shenzhen stop of a headline artist's tour, a cloaked figure appeared on stage. When the cloak dropped it revealed data cables and exposed mechanical joints, with the microphone grip matching the singer's own. Several outlets covered the moment, and none named a supplier 10Robot stand-in appears at a Shenzhen tour stopSina · 21 August 2026View the entry below →. The scene shows that a production budget will pay for another specific person to appear on stage. It does not show the terms between that production and any supplier.

What the three settings share is that the buyer purchases presence rather than labour. The unit has no hands to grasp with, no legs to walk on, and moves no material. Another detail from the booth is that a chest-mounted camera reads the emotion of the person opposite and answers by voice 9Production meets demand at WRC 2026Economic Daily · 22 August 2026View the entry below →.

2.2 Alternatives and the unsolved part

Before this category existed, the same need had four answers: a human stand-in, pre-recorded video on a large screen, holographic projection, or a silicone figure built as a prop and rigged afterwards. The first three cannot put an object on stage, and the fourth cannot blink, follow a face or hold a conversation. All four keep likeness and motion in separate systems that never meet.

Three gaps remain open: realism, the cost of a one-off build, and stability across many performances. A face that stops at nine-tenths of a likeness is the hardest to sell: the audience registers the gap immediately, and willingness to pay falls with it. Every face requires new structure and new skin, so unit cost does not fall with volume. A stage cannot absorb a mid-show failure. No published industry data supports any of the three 15Bionic robots push toward human likeness21st Century Business Herald · 3 July 2026View the entry below →.

Share of B2B settings (for SAM)30 to 50 per cent. Basis: Demand splits in two. Performance, culture and tourism, and brand display belong to B2B, the settings HokMind's public material names 1HokMind About pageHokMind · 2026View the entry below →At 20 per cent, SAM falls to CNY 90 m to 600 m; at 70 per cent it rises to CNY 320 m to 2.1 bn

Multiplying the endpoints gives TAM of CNY 450 m at the low end, from 1,000 units at CNY 300,000 and a multiplier of 1.5, and CNY 3 bn at the high end, from 3,000 units at CNY 500,000 and a multiplier of 2.0. SAM takes 30 to 50 per cent of that, or CNY 135 m to 1.5 bn.

Payment capacity can be read from a single show. The 3,000 large performances in China during 2025 generated CNY 32.45 bn in box office, an average of CNY 10.82 m per show 16National box office reached CNY 61.655 bn in 2025Xinhua · 14 January 2026View the entry below →. A bionic unit priced between CNY 170,000 and CNY 1 m therefore costs a producer between 1.6 and 9 per cent of one show, which decides whether a producer will buy, not whom it will buy from (Figure 2).

Delivery volumes and customer names are unconfirmed, so SOM can only be illustrative. At CNY 300,000 to 990,000 per unit, a tour configured with a principal stand-in and one backup would bill CNY 600,000 to 1.98 m, or 0.07 to 0.24 per cent of the CNY 818 m midpoint of SAM (Figure 1). That magnitude describes what a single-customer model weighs against the market. It is too small a sample to infer share.

Three parameters carry unequal weight. Price and the customisation multiplier matter more than unit count: tripling units while holding price and multiplier at the floor lifts TAM to CNY 1.35 bn, while using the standard half-body price and no customisation drops it to CNY 120 m to 360 m. The order-of-magnitude spread comes from missing public data on the parameters, not from the precision of the arithmetic. The company publishes no market size of its own, so the figures above have no official counterpart to check against.

3. The company

HokMind was registered in Beijing in March 2026. Founder Sun Niannian has two subsidiaries behind the parent: Chengdu for algorithms and Langfang for manufacturing 30HokMind company page, ZhaopinZhaopin · 2026View the entry below →34HokMind Langfang subsidiaryGasgoo · 2026View the entry below →.

Headcount figures disagree across two recruitment platforms, one listing 20 to 99 staff and the other 50 to 99 30HokMind company page, ZhaopinZhaopin · 2026View the entry below →31HokMind job listingsQuanzhi · 2026View the entry below →. Eleven roles are open, spanning robot algorithms in Chengdu at CNY 30,000 to 50,000 a month, systems integration and testing, product management, a marketing director and a finance lead. The mix says more than the company's age does: engineering is being staffed while marketing and finance are being built, which points to a shift from project delivery toward a saleable standard product (Figure 3).

The founder's public appearances cluster in August 2026, one on a conference panel and one in an interview with foreign media 8Robot core components forum in BeijingCCTV · 24 August 2026View the entry below →14Interview with HokMind founderSputnik · 20 August 2026View the entry below →. 4. The product: form, limits and price band

4.1 Form and capability limits

The Primal line has two models. The M1 is a full-body unit at 50 kg, and the F1 is a desktop bust 4HokMind exhibitor profile, World Robot Conference 2026World Robot Conference · 2026View the entry below →5HokMind product launch and interactive performance, WRC 2026World Robot Conference · 2026View the entry below →. Official descriptions stop at facial expression and upper-body movement, and words such as walking, mobility or navigation do not appear 3HokMind homepageHokMind · 2026View the entry below →. Video shot by visitors shows both units fixed on stands, producing gestures and expressions 13The robots that can pass for humanuniversal.net · August 2026View the entry below →.

Four items come from a distributor's product page rather than from the company: 32 degrees of freedom in the face, gaze tracking, bionic skin and the 50 kg total weight. The same page lists dimensions, runtime and payload as pending confirmation 6HokMind Primal M1 and F1 product page, Hope-RobotHope-Robot · 2026View the entry below →. For comparison, Noetix's X-Head 1 carries 24 degrees of freedom across the whole unit at 7.5 kg, and the unit that appeared on the 2026 Spring Festival Gala concentrates 32 drive motors in the face, with 12 around the mouth and 3 in the neck 22Noetix X-Head 1 sold at auctionSina Finance · 23 May 2026View the entry below →25Noetix on bionic faces entering commercial settingsSecurities Times · 17 February 2026View the entry below →. Motor counts and degrees of freedom are different units of measure, so the comparison indicates direction rather than equivalence.

Comparability in pricing and competition rests on one fact of form: this is a standing humanoid fixture in which the head carries the entire performance function, the upper body carries posture, and the legs supply silhouette and mass. Labour is outside the product definition.

4.2 Position in the public price ladder

The category has already produced a clear ladder. Apart from one reported project price, every figure below is an official published price. UBTECH splits the U1 into three tiers: a half body without limbs at CNY 119,800, a full body with limbs that cannot walk at CNY 169,800, and a biped from CNY 880,000. One product line separates being lifelike from being mobile, and in doing so marks the capability boundary for the whole category 20UBTech U1 price and deliveryhumanoza.com · 2026View the entry below →21UBTECH launches UWORLD U1Embodied Global · 2026View the entry below →.

HokMind sits in the upper middle of that ladder: full-body form, a 32-DoF face and custom character work, priced by quotation and left unpublished 6HokMind Primal M1 and F1 product page, Hope-RobotHope-Robot · 2026View the entry below →. On product positioning, it falls into the gap between CNY 169,800 and CNY 880,000. Without a transaction price, the question of whether the figure is high or low cannot be answered (Figure 4).

The published price band across five forms

5. Customers: what the evidence supports

The available evidence falls into three layers of unequal certainty. The first is a company statement: during the conference, founder Sun Niannian said the company had reached an agreement with a celebrity to supply robots for that artist's concerts 7World Robot Conference 2026 trends reportifeng · 20 August 2026View the entry below →. This is a stated intention, and no official material gives a customer name, unit count or contract value.

The second is a public event. On 21 August 2026, a tour stop in Shenzhen put a cloaked figure on stage that resolved into data cables and mechanical joints, with the microphone grip matching the singer 10Robot stand-in appears at a Shenzhen tour stopSina · 21 August 2026View the entry below →. Several outlets reported the moment, and none reported a supplier.

The third is a third-party association. On 19 August, China Business Network published a video report calling the WRC exhibit "the same model as the concert" and stating that HokMind's bionic robots take two months to customise. That report predates the 21 August performance, so it points at the exhibition unit rather than at the stage unit. Freckles, dimples and visible veins were described as part of the customisation 35Concert stand-in seen at the World Robot ConferenceChina Business Network · 19 August 2026View the entry below →.

Taken together, the three layers establish three things: a partnership statement, a contemporaneous public appearance and a single third-party association. They do not support the claim that the stage unit was delivered by HokMind, how many units were involved, or at what price. The number of publicly verifiable customers is zero: there is one cooperation statement and no delivery record.

The company profile ranges wider. The company profile claims participation in the Spring Festival Gala, in headline artists' concerts and in overseas commercial projects, and says that high-end performance and culture-tourism settings have already been commercialised 1HokMind About pageHokMind · 2026View the entry below →. The Gala claim carries a different subject in each official page: the about page credits the team, while the conference exhibitor page credits the company 1HokMind About pageHokMind · 2026View the entry below →4HokMind exhibitor profile, World Robot Conference 2026World Robot Conference · 2026View the entry below →. No other setting is named.

The distinction has practical weight. A second named customer within a year, from a different industry, would indicate that the process is becoming a product. If public information stays at the level of a cooperation statement, the visibility of the revenue mix will not improve, and outside valuation will rest on peer prices and the company's own capacity disclosures.

6. Supply chain: materials upstream, decisions downstream

6.1 Materials and components

One partnership is verifiable: a research collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology covering bionic materials, flexible sensing, smart textiles and human-machine interaction 1HokMind About pageHokMind · 2026View the entry below →. This is where the institute sits in the team's composition.

The rest can only be inferred from the industry. Bionic skin is moving from silicone toward flexible electronic skin, with companies such as Mingxin Xuteng and Hanwei Electronics working on it. Desktop heads depend on millimetre-scale torque joint servos, and Figurobot's 60 cm desktop unit reaches under CNY 10,000 with more than 30 degrees of freedom 15Bionic robots push toward human likeness21st Century Business Herald · 3 July 2026View the entry below →. Supply maturity sets the barrier for new entrants: motors, servos, silicone and skin processes can all be bought, so the difference lies in integration. Voice and large-model capability are largely bought in as well, and the algorithm job description asks for work alongside speech recognition, speech synthesis, large models and vision-language models 30HokMind company page, ZhaopinZhaopin · 2026View the entry below →.

Component suppliers are undisclosed. That is a gap in public information, not a measure of the share of in-house content.

6.2 The decision chain downstream

Visible sales run mainly direct to business customers, while specifications and quotation are listed by a third-party distributor, Hope-Robot. Channel terms, revenue share and territorial rights are unpublished 6HokMind Primal M1 and F1 product page, Hope-RobotHope-Robot · 2026View the entry below →.

Entry into a performance happens at the content production stage rather than in procurement, and public material discloses neither the parties involved nor the budget line. Its first market is performance rather than the factory, which follows from the length of the two decision chains: a show is commissioned per date, while factory procurement passes through technical validation and safety assessment.

7. Competition: one budget, three layers

7.1 Direct competitors

Noetix is the closest reference in the category. The X-Head 1 sells for CNY 99,000 at 7.5 kg with 24 degrees of freedom. A sister product appeared on the 2026 CCTV Spring Festival Gala, and that unit concentrates 32 drive motors in the face, a count that indicates scale rather than an equivalent DoF figure 22Noetix X-Head 1 sold at auctionSina Finance · 23 May 2026View the entry below →24How the Gala bionic head was builtThe Beijing News · 17 February 2026View the entry below →. AheadForm took a different route, building faces rather than bodies. It completed seven rounds in two years, including a Series A2 in the hundreds of millions of yuan, and its line includes a replica series for real people. 7.2 Pressure from both sides

HokMind's headroom is set by pressure from two directions. Upstream, the face is becoming a pluggable module, with AheadForm positioning itself as a facial supplier, which would let any integrator buy a face alone. Downstream, the half-body price has been pushed to CNY 119,800 against 13,361 pre-orders 18UBTECH opens pre-orders for its bionic companionLanjinger · 30 June 2026View the entry below →, and at that level the anchor for "a face that looks human" is already fixed.

HokMind sits between the two, building neither modules nor volume. Its position is uncrowded, with price high on the horizontal axis and customisation high on the vertical one, and the ceiling on that position is set by the efficiency of the customisation process (Figure 5).

Position on price and degree of customisation

Fig 5 Position on price and degree of customisation

8. Funding and peer benchmarks

No funding has been disclosed, and no round for HokMind appears in public reporting 26Noetix moves from motion control to modelsOFweek · September 2026View the entry below →36AheadForm completes a seventh round in two yearsEmbodied Global · 2026View the entry below →. The peer pace gives context: in the first half of 2026 the embodied intelligence sector recorded 288 financing events across 226 companies, with disclosed value above CNY 46 bn, an average of about CNY 204 m per company 29Humanoid robots in 2026: output boom and deployment puzzleTMTPost · 2026View the entry below →. Noetix reached nine rounds and more than CNY 1.5 bn by March, while AheadForm reached seven rounds in two years with a Series A2 in the hundreds of millions 26Noetix moves from motion control to modelsOFweek · September 2026View the entry below →36AheadForm completes a seventh round in two yearsEmbodied Global · 2026View the entry below →.

The weight of those numbers lies in frequency rather than amount. Nine rounds mean external capital arriving every three or four months to fund iteration, and seven rounds mean someone kept betting on faces alone. That absence, rather than the peer numbers themselves, is where observation should start.

Revenue has neither an official figure nor a third-party estimate, so only the cost side leaves public traces: three sites in Beijing, Chengdu and Langfang, and eleven roles open from algorithms to marketing. Hiring that keeps expanding corresponds to order flow, and a collective withdrawal corresponds to spending cuts; either move shows up earlier than any quarterly figure (Figure 6).

Funding rounds of two peers, amounts as labels only

Fig 6 Funding rounds of two peers, with amounts as labels only

9. Substitutability

9.1 Visible differentiation

HokMind works on a step that requires aesthetic judgement. Servos, silicone and algorithms can all be bought; knowing whose face a face should look like cannot. A third-party video report describes the exhibition unit's treatment of freckles, dimples and visible veins at a level of detail that peers' public material rarely matches 35Concert stand-in seen at the World Robot ConferenceChina Business Network · 19 August 2026View the entry below →, and the team's origin offers an explanation for the direction of the craft 1HokMind About pageHokMind · 2026View the entry below →.

Capability of this kind takes time to form. A film effects team builds a face in reverse order, deciding first how the face will be shot and only then choosing materials, moulds and paint. A robotics team typically builds structure first and considers appearance later. Both sequences exist inside one team, which is what makes a two-month delivery possible. Noetix took a similar two months to deliver its Gala head 24How the Gala bionic head was builtThe Beijing News · 17 February 2026View the entry below →, so two months is close to the category norm and does not constitute a speed advantage.

9.2 What stays invisible

Whether the position holds depends on several items that remain out of sight: no relevant patent records appear in public searches, which is not the same as none existing; customer contracts are undisclosed; the share of in-house content is undisclosed; the cost structure is undisclosed.

A more practical test is the customer's switching cost. If a stand-in is modelled on one artist's face, moving to another supplier means building the face again, and that switching cost is itself the barrier. If the customer is buying a machine that looks human, switching cost approaches zero, and that line marks where the company currently stands.

10. Indicators to watch

Pressure from both sides: whether upstream faces start shipping as modules, and whether the half-body price falls further. Either move compresses the middle layer.

A second customer: whether a second named customer appears within three months of the tour closing, and which industry it comes from.

Hiring: eleven roles spanning algorithms, integration, product, marketing and finance amount to an expansion stance. A collective withdrawal of postings shows up earlier than any announcement, and salary bands indicate which end the company is willing to fund.

Stage performance: a live show is the single acceptance test for this category, and one mid-show failure removes the second chance.

Wording: the about page credits the team with taking part in the Spring Festival Gala, while the exhibitor page credits the company 1HokMind About pageHokMind · 2026View the entry below →4HokMind exhibitor profile, World Robot Conference 2026World Robot Conference · 2026View the entry below →.

The open question is not a technology narrative but whether a single commission can be turned into a repeatable delivery process. Where the next customer comes from, and whether the mould has to be reopened, say more about the company's direction than any specification, and answer sooner than any valuation yardstick.
