Singapore Massage Chain Natureland to Debut Robot Massage and AI Assessment

Natureland Wellness Group, a Singapore-based massage chain, plans to launch a new format called Natureland Plus by the end of 2026. The new business will introduce robotic massage technology, an AI-based client assessment system, and smart therapy devices.

Founder and CEO Fion Wu told Channel NewsAsia that the first outlet is planned for Orchard Road in Singapore. The concept is designed to combine traditional massage services with technology. AI evaluates a visitor's physical condition and recommends suitable therapy plans, while the robotic system scans the back, identifies therapy points, and adjusts pressure according to the client's preferences.

Robots will not replace massage therapists but assist them, Fion Wu emphasized. The company is considering combination therapy, where a robot performs one program while a professional therapist massages other parts of the client's body. The new format also plans 15- to 30-minute short sessions, mainly for busy professionals.

A traditional one-hour massage at the chain currently costs about S$75 (US$59). Fion Wu said pure robot therapy may be priced between S$50 and S$55, though final pricing is not yet set. This pricing structure suggests robot massage is not positioned as a premium service but slightly cheaper than manual massage, using the price gap to attract time- and price-sensitive customers.

A shortage of qualified therapists is a bottleneck for expansion. Natureland has 15 stores in Singapore and nearly 600 therapists and staff. Fion Wu explained that further expansion is limited by a shortage of qualified employees. The situation is also affected by reduced foreign worker quotas in the service sector, announced in 2019 and phased in from 2020 to 2021. The chain typically opens one new store per year.

If technology can handle part of the work or collaborate with therapists, the company expects to open two to three Natureland Plus stores per year, provided suitable locations can be found. This change in expansion speed is the direct commercial motivation for robot massage. Manual therapist shortages mean long hiring and training cycles, capping store expansion at one per year. If robots can take over some standardized therapy procedures, the same number of staff could support more stores.

Fion Wu believes robotic systems can provide more consistent pressure levels, because each therapist has their own working style. This points to a practical problem in massage services: consistency of customer experience is hard to guarantee. The same therapist may vary at different times, and differences between therapists are even greater. If a robot can control pressure, rhythm, and points at a stable level, customers will have a more similar experience across different stores and times.

Fion Wu also stressed the importance of the human factor. Natureland aims to retain employees by offering opportunities to become trainers, enter management, or work with clients. Robots handle repetitive standard procedures, while humans handle parts requiring judgment and communication. If this division of labor works, the employment structure of the massage industry will change.
