Unitree Unveils Dex5-S Dexterous Hand With 22 Backdrivable Joints and Impact Protection
On September 21, Unitree Technology announced the Dex5-S dexterous hand. Built at a 1:1 human-hand scale, the device packs 22 joints, each capable of smooth backdriving and equipped with peak impact torque protection. Unitree says the design aims to improve flexibility and safety in complex manipulation tasks while reducing the risk of joint damage from external impacts. According to Wallstreetcn, the launch further expands Unitree's embodied-AI hardware portfolio and offers a new end-effector option for future humanoid robots that need fine manipulation. The hand's backdrivability could make teleoperation and compliant control more intuitive, while the impact protection addresses a common failure point in dexterous robotic hands. Dexterous hands are seen as a key component for humanoid robots, enabling tool use, grasping, and interaction with unstructured environments. The company has not yet shared pricing or availability details.
