Intrinsic Open Sources Core Platform Capabilities to Speed Robot Development

Intrinsic Innovation LLC has released Intrinsic Core, an open-source set of ROS-compatible capabilities for building robotic applications. The Alphabet Inc. unit announced the package at ROSCon 2026 in Toronto, and the code is available on GitHub under the permissive Apache 2.0 license.

Robotics teams often spend hundreds of hours writing robotic capabilities and infrastructure from scratch, according to Intrinsic. The company turned capabilities developed for real manufacturing deployments into a pre-configured software environment that runs on local hardware.

Intrinsic describes these capabilities as building blocks of robot behavior that users can combine to create adaptive AI systems.

Brian Gerkey, chief technology officer at Intrinsic and a co-founder and board chair of Open Robotics, told The Robot Report that the release represents a durable commitment. He said Intrinsic is not simply dropping off code and saying "have fun," but sharing the core of its own software stack, which the company also depends on.

By design, the capabilities are ROS-compatible, giving developers more ways to improve existing applications or build new ones. Geoffrey Biggs, CTO of the Open Source Robotics Foundation, told The Robot Report that the release is both a first step and a demonstration of where robotics development is heading.

He said platforms like Intrinsic Core will make robots far easier to produce.
