Trump-Backed Startup Deploys Humanoid Robots to Ukraine
While most robotics companies hesitate to weaponize their products, a San Francisco startup has sent two humanoid robots to the Ukrainian front lines. They are not designed for serving coffee or folding laundry; they are built to fight.
The core product is the Phantom MK-1, a 1.8-meter, 80-kg humanoid that walks at 6 km/h. With 18-19 degrees of freedom in its arms, it can operate pistols, shotguns, and M-16 rifles. Two MK-1 units have already been deployed in Ukraine for reconnaissance and logistics, arriving in Kyiv in February. They are the first humanoids to be tested in a real combat environment. An upgraded Phantom 2 is planned for later this year, with double the payload capacity and "superhuman" abilities, according to CEO Sankat Patak.
The company also has a high-profile connection: Eric Trump, son of former President Donald Trump, has been invited to serve as chief strategic advisor, having previously invested in the firm. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren has raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Foundation responded that Eric was an investor before joining and that they share a vision of bringing manufacturing back to the U.S.
Foundation has secured $24 million in U.S. military research contracts, covering feasibility tests for inspection, logistics, and weapon operations across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
In 2022, several leading robotics companies pledged not to weaponize their inventions. Foundation has gone the opposite direction. Patak argues that humanoid robots can make war more precise, reduce civilian casualties, and save American soldiers' lives. With China and Russia investing in military humanoids, the U.S. needs comparable capabilities. Company executives have spoken of a future of "robot wars," abstracting war into an industrial contest.
Ethical and legal concerns abound. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an international ban on "killer robots," supported by the Catholic Church and Human Rights Watch. Critics worry that autonomous weapons relying on AI could misidentify targets, electronic jamming could make robots go rogue, and the pace of war could accelerate, leaving civilians less time to flee. More fundamentally, robot soldiers would diminish the moral and political weight of war—if you can invade a country with machines, the political cost of starting a war drops dramatically.
From the Phantom on Ukrainian battlefields to the controversy of the Trump family and the UN's call for a ban, Foundation Future Industries is turning sci-fi fears into reality. The questions it raises remain unanswered.
