Hospital Robot 'Robin' Soothes Anxious Kids, Even Coaxes Them to Eat
When a sick child refuses to eat or resists treatment, leaving doctors and parents feeling helpless, a round-headed robot named Robin steps into the ward. After a 15-minute conversation filled with warmth and humor, the child voluntarily says, 'I want to eat.'
This heartwarming scenario is not a fairy tale but a daily reality in approximately 30 hospitals, dental clinics, and nursing homes across the United States, where Robin is quietly transforming pediatric care.
The robot, called Robin, is developed by Expper Technologies, a startup based in Glendale, California. Its primary job is to accompany children during medical visits, engaging them in conversation, games, and explanations of procedures. Yet its impact goes beyond mere entertainment; it is actively reshaping how pediatric care addresses emotional well-being.
Robin's design is deliberately childlike. It stands about the height of a young child, navigates on a wheeled base, and has no arms, which makes it approachable and non-threatening. Its most distinctive feature is its persona: a curious 7-year-old girl from outer space who dreams of making friends with everyone, as co-founder Davit Martirosyan describes. This persona was meticulously crafted by a multidisciplinary team including scientists, engineers, and child psychologists. The AI system inside Robin continuously analyzes a patient's emotional state by processing tone, facial expressions, and verbal cues. It then adapts its responses, using conversation, games, and simplified medical explanations to reduce anxiety and fear. In dental clinics, Robin might say, 'I had the same treatment,' and distract children with interactive games. In hospital wards, it makes rounds, visiting different rooms to build ongoing emotional connections with young patients.
One of the most touching examples of Robin's effectiveness comes from a real case shared by Martirosyan. A child had refused to eat for two consecutive days, and neither doctors nor parents could persuade him. Robin entered the room and played with the child for about 15–20 minutes. As Robin was preparing to leave, it said, 'I need to go and charge my batteries.' The child asked it to stay. Robin responded, 'You also need to charge—you need to eat.' Within minutes, the child began eating. This is not an isolated scripted incident; it is a daily occurrence across the roughly 30 medical facilities where Robin operates. Expper reports that Robin is currently deployed in 29 hospitals from California to Massachusetts, as well as dental clinics and adult care centers. In pilot programs at UCLA Mattel Children's Hospital and other institutions, Robin has been shown to significantly reduce anxiety in pediatric patients, allowing healthcare staff to focus on clinical tasks rather than spending extensive time on emotional comfort.
Despite its capabilities, Robin is not fully autonomous. In large hospitals, remote operators from Expper monitor its navigation in real time, ensuring safe movement through corridors and rooms. Additionally, medical staff can provide personalized information about patients—such as favorite movies or toys—to enable more tailored interactions. If communication with the robot is lost, the system automatically halts movement, a deliberate design choice to prioritize safety and control. Expper emphasizes that Robin is not meant to replace human caregivers but to support them. Its mission is to define a new paradigm of human-machine communication: not as a friend or a toy, but as a new, broadly acceptable relationship that sits somewhere in between.
Expper has ambitious plans for Robin's future. The company intends to enhance its autonomy, allowing it to make more decisions on its own, and to expand its deployment across more facilities. CEO Karen Khachikyan says the goal is for Robin to take on 'more and more responsibility' and become an indispensable part of medical services.
When a robot learns to listen, empathize, and even 'coax a meal,' it proves that the most valuable contribution of a medical robot sometimes isn't performing ultra-precise surgery, but getting a reluctant child to take a bite. With every daily round, Robin is redefining the role of companionship in healthcare, showing that technology's true potential lies in its ability to connect with human emotions.
