Robotics Roadmaps from Around the World: An Introduction to a New Series
What is a robotics roadmap, and why does it matter? Machines with fixed abilities are becoming obsolete. Future robots must learn, adapt to unpredictability, and interact with the physical world as adeptly as humans. This is the essence of Industry 4.0. Robotics already underpins manufacturing, healthcare, agriculture, and transportation. The shift from lab to market could have massive impacts. Many countries treat robotics investment as a national priority. A global race is underway to embody AI in robots, influencing labor markets, immigration, military, commerce, and education.
Understanding the stakeholders helps roboticists shape their innovation's trajectory. They can advise policymakers on the field's viability and potential to transform sectors. Government support boosts academic and industrial progress, reassuring private investors. Effective collaboration accelerates innovation where society needs it most. As a community, we must discuss collective milestones. What should robots do in ten years? Who are the end users? What resources are needed for real-world deployment? Though it seems removed from daily work, engaging with these questions can have far-reaching impact.
Roadmaps are effective tools for the interdisciplinary robotics community to consolidate ideas and define a shared trajectory. They vary by audience: a federal action plan directs research institutions and incentivizes investors; an academic paper by experts can inspire innovators and create a common vision. Influential roadmaps often originate from academia, industry, and government, combining perspectives to propose realistic objectives. Examples include the US National Robotics Roadmap—a bottom-up, academic-led effort that secured major government investment in collaborative robots. The industry-led ADRA Strategic Research, Innovation and Deployment Agenda championed a 'Physical AI' funding track across the EU via Horizon Europe. Made in China 2025, a government-driven plan, helped transform China from low-cost workshops to a global high-tech leader in a decade.
While some internationally collaborative roadmaps exist, most are country-specific, reflecting unique economic, geopolitical, and cultural priorities. A streamlined agenda can elevate a country's global value chain position or foster innovation for technological sovereignty, especially in an era of disruptive digital transformation.
