Alibaba Unveils Automotive RISC-V Processor IP, Roadmap for Self-Driving and Robotics
Alibaba's DAMO Academy, the research institute of the Chinese e-commerce giant, unveiled the XuanTie E908A automotive processor IP on October 19 at the RISC-V China Summit in Shenzhen. The processor IP is designed for safety-related computing, domain controllers, and vehicle gateways, according to the academy.
The E908A supports the ASIL-B and ASIL-D automotive functional safety requirements. These standards, defined by ISO 26262, specify safety integrity levels for automotive systems, with ASIL-D being the most stringent. Compliance with these levels means the processor can be used in systems where failure could lead to serious injury or death, such as braking or steering control.
Domain controllers are centralized computing units that manage multiple vehicle functions, while vehicle gateways serve as communication hubs between different in-vehicle networks. Both require high reliability and real-time performance, making the E908A's safety certifications critical for automotive applications.
The unveiling marks Alibaba's deepening push into the automotive semiconductor market, leveraging the open-source RISC-V instruction set architecture. RISC-V is gaining traction in the automotive industry due to its flexibility and potential for customization, allowing chip designers to tailor processors for specific safety and performance needs. DAMO Academy's move positions it alongside established automotive chip vendors like Infineon, NXP, and Renesas, which are also exploring RISC-V-based solutions.
RISC-V, an open-standard instruction set architecture, allows companies to design processors without licensing fees, which can reduce costs and increase innovation. In China, RISC-V has gained significant momentum as a way to reduce reliance on foreign proprietary architectures like Arm and x86. The RISC-V China Summit, held in Shenzhen, is a major event for the domestic RISC-V ecosystem, bringing together industry leaders, researchers, and developers to discuss the latest advancements and applications.
The XuanTie E908A is part of Alibaba's broader efforts to develop a full-stack semiconductor ecosystem, from chip design to software and services. The company has been investing heavily in R&D, and the E908A represents a significant step in its automotive strategy.
In addition to the E908A, Alibaba's DAMO Academy introduced a processor roadmap targeting autonomous driving and embodied AI. The roadmap includes the planned C950A automotive processor, which aims to deliver five times the performance of existing automotive RISC-V products.
The C950A is expected to launch by the end of 2027, according to the company. This timeline aligns with the industry's growing demand for high-performance computing in vehicles, as autonomous driving systems require increasingly powerful processors to handle complex sensor data, perception algorithms, and decision-making tasks. Embodied AI, which refers to artificial intelligence systems that interact with the physical world through sensors and actuators, also demands high-performance, low-power processors.
DAMO Academy also reported that cumulative shipments of chips using its XuanTie processor IP have exceeded 6 billion units. This milestone reflects the expansion of XuanTie from established applications into higher-performance computing markets, including automotive and edge computing. The XuanTie family includes a range of processor cores, from low-power embedded designs to high-performance application processors.
The roadmap and shipment figures were detailed in a report by Semiconductor Industry Insights, a Chinese semiconductor industry publication. The report highlights Alibaba's ambitions to become a key player in the automotive chip market, which is currently dominated by traditional semiconductor vendors. With the automotive industry increasingly focusing on electrification, connectivity, and autonomy, the demand for specialized, high-performance processors is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.
Alibaba's push into automotive processors comes as the global automotive chip market is experiencing robust growth, driven by the increasing electronic content in vehicles and the rise of electric and autonomous vehicles. According to industry estimates, the automotive semiconductor market is expected to reach over $100 billion by 2030. Alibaba's entry could intensify competition in this space, particularly in the RISC-V segment, where few established players exist.
The 6 billion cumulative shipments milestone underscores the widespread adoption of XuanTie processor IP in various applications, including IoT devices, consumer electronics, and industrial control. This track record provides credibility as Alibaba seeks to penetrate the automotive market, where reliability and long-term support are paramount.
