Bedrock Robotics Launches Its First Operator-Free Excavator Deployments
Bedrock Robotics Inc. has deployed fully autonomous, retrofitted heavy excavators on active infrastructure projects in Texas and Nevada. These AI-driven machines aim to address the construction industry's severe labor shortages, safety hazards, and cost overruns.
In the U.S., more than 40% of the construction workforce is expected to retire within five years. Bedrock Robotics, based in San Francisco, has raised $350 million in venture capital and is led by former Waymo autonomy veterans. Its plug-and-play retrofit system turns complex, high-risk earthwork into software-driven operations, helping the physical economy transition to self-orchestrating machine fleets on live job sites.
Bedrock's first projects include a water treatment facility with Sundt Construction in Nevada, a multi-million-cubic-yard earthwork site with Champion Site Prep in Texas, and a 1.2 million-cubic-yard civil sitework project with Zachry Construction Corp. The company claims these deployments represent a significant shift, as AI performs work of genuine economic value in the physical world.
According to Bedrock's Chief Technology Officer Kevin Peterson, the current scope involves clearing earth, early earthwork, cut and fill operations, and prep work for foundations and rough cuts. While the system will eventually enable retrofits of existing late-model excavators, the company is currently deploying new equipment outfitted and tested at its headquarters. Peterson expects to run on partner equipment by the end of the year.
Safety is the top priority for Bedrock. Peterson stated that the machines operate around people and must react to other vehicles, such as water trucks. The system can work safely without an operator in the seat, monitoring itself for progress and calling home if it gets stuck.
Having a person in the loop ensures successful operations while minimizing interruptions onsite. Bedrock emphasized that safety cannot be compromised.
Bedrock plans to scale up its deployments and take on more finesse work. The company is also working on orchestrating multiple machines together, such as excavators, bulldozers, trucks, and graders, to work as a team. This long-term roadmap aims to accelerate building projects by having clusters of machines collaborate.
According to Peterson, the next steps include getting more customers using the machines to gain experience, expanding into tasks requiring more precision, and developing coordinated machine fleets that can plan and execute jobs together.
