China Adds Embodied AI Robot Application Technician to Official Profession List
China's Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security recently unveiled a new batch of professions, including 11 new professions and 23 new work types. Among them is the embodied AI robot application technician, a role born as robots move into factories, warehouses, and homes.
Essentially, the job is to act as a teacher for robots. Unlike fixed production line equipment that only repeats single actions like moving goods or welding, robots in real-world environments must adapt to diverse situations and handle unexpected events. This requires humans to train them repeatedly.
Chen Jinxing, an employee at Fujian Jufu Technology Co., Ltd., says daily training involves collecting over 500 data sets per action. After screening, about 90% is valid and passed to the R&D team to optimize models. The company has more than 100 workers in this role.
One task is scene generalization training, which prevents robots from becoming rigid and working only in one scenario. Technicians take robots to offices, homes, and other settings, practicing with real objects of various positions and types. All training uses real items to ensure data reflects reality. This differs from lab simulation because real objects' weight, material, friction, and reflectivity are hard to replicate. Models trained with real data have higher success rates when transferred to real scenarios. Chen Jinxing notes the talent gap is widening, directly tied to the workload: 500 data sets per action, with a robot needing to learn dozens of actions, making data collection linear and impossible to skip via algorithms.
The journey from a market-driven new job to national recognition takes one to two years. An official from the Fuzhou Human Resources and Social Security Bureau explains that it starts on the market side, where industrial iteration creates new roles. Companies begin to employ workers, but job titles and skill requirements are scattered without unified standards. Once the position reaches a certain scale, the national government initiates collection and validation, officially including it in the national occupational classification catalog. After release, supporting national vocational skill standards must be developed, clarifying job responsibilities, skill levels, and assessment points. Generally, a new profession takes one to two years to mature. Fuzhou will survey local industry demand and build a full chain of training, assessment, and skill competitions. The inclusion of the robot technician indicates its scale has passed a threshold, no longer a temporary role within a few companies.
The list also includes an age-friendly renovation designer as a new work type. With an aging population, home modifications for the elderly are a rigid demand but have long lacked a profession and standards. Qiu Ping, with over a decade in the field, says the industry previously had no dedicated identity, and the public mistook it for simple decoration, when it is actually professional design concerning elderly safety. It requires an on-site survey and a customized plan based on mobility and living environment, covering anti-slip floors, night lighting, handrails, floor leveling, and widening doors for wheelchair users. Qiu Ping's team has implemented pilot projects in six villages in Luoyuan County, becoming typical cases for rural age-friendly renovation. Official recognition addresses the industry's fragmentation and lack of ratings.
For the robot technician role, the next question is whether the standard of 500 data sets per action will change as model capabilities improve. If robots can learn new tasks from few demonstrations, how will the job content adjust?
