Morning Market Review: ChiNext Plunges Nearly 5% as Stocks Tumble
Markets opened lower and continued to fall through the morning session on August 19, with all three major indexes declining. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 1.96%, the Shenzhen Component Index slid 3.97%, and the ChiNext Index dropped 4.98% by the midday close, nearing a 5% half-day plunge.
Despite the overall weakness, some sectors bucked the trend. Coal stocks surged, with Baotailong, Shaanxi Heimao, Dayou Energy, and Meijin Energy all hitting their daily price limits. The banking sector also gained ground, as China CITIC Bank rose over 4%. Shipping stocks moved up near the end of the morning trading, with Nanjing Port hitting the daily limit.
On the downside, robot concept stocks were among the biggest losers, with Zhongda Lide, Julong Intelligent, Wuzhou Xinchun, and Jintuo Machinery all limit-down. Semiconductor stocks also adjusted sharply, with Hua Hong Semiconductor and others falling more than 10%.
The market was broadly negative, with nearly 5,000 stocks declining across the Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Beijing exchanges. Only 546 stocks advanced, while 4,624 declined. There were 31 stocks hitting the daily limit up and 36 hitting the limit down. Half-day turnover reached 1.63 trillion yuan, indicating active trading.
