Robot Dogs Join Police Patrols at Kazakhstan’s Nomad Alemi Festival

At the Nomad Alemi nomadic culture festival, police officers were accompanied by several robot dogs. These were not demonstration units on a display stand; they were assigned real patrol duties.

The event took place in a village named after Kassym Kaysenov in the Ulan district of eastern Kazakhstan.

The East Kazakhstan police department said this was the region’s first actual deployment of robot dogs at a large event, and the first time robotic systems were used directly to maintain public order.

Each robot dog operates as a mobile observation point. The machines can patrol designated areas autonomously, conduct continuous video surveillance, perform video analytics, and recognize faces.

Information is transmitted in real time to an operations control center, allowing police to monitor the situation on the ground. The robots are equipped with strobe lights and speakers, and can issue voice warnings to visitors when needed.

According to local police, every robot is an independent mobile observation point that transmits live images back to the station while moving. This deployment addresses a contradiction at large events: police resources are limited, but many points require attention.

Robot dogs can fill areas not covered by fixed cameras and can move into crowds—something fixed surveillance cannot do.

East Kazakhstan police stressed that robotic systems are now part of the region’s digital security framework. Nomad Alemi was the first large venue in the region to directly use them for maintaining public order.

The significance of this statement is that it moves robot dogs from the position of 'trial' and 'demonstration' to that of 'established force.' Police did not treat them as a one-time technology demonstration but incorporated them into routine duty arrangements.

The news itself is short, but placed against the recent pace of robot applications in Kazakhstan, it shows continuity. Previously, a robot conductor took the stage to open the Kurmangazy Orchestra’s 93rd season.

Police patrols and orchestra conducting are entirely different scenarios—one security-oriented, one cultural performance—but they point to the same thing: robots are moving from laboratories and exhibitions into Central Asian public spaces. These applications are not yet large-scale, deployments are limited, and scenarios are concentrated in controllable environments such as large events, but the path is clear.

The facial recognition capability is particularly noteworthy. The robot dogs transmit live video to the control center and also have facial recognition, meaning they collect not only images but identity information that can be compared with databases.

Using such capabilities in public events involves a series of issues: data retention, comparison authority, and handling misidentifications. The Kazakh police have not disclosed how the robot dogs’ facial recognition is specifically used, how long data is stored, or how comparison results are linked with on-site police.

These details determine whether the system remains at the level of auxiliary observation or already has active recognition and early warning capabilities.

The East Kazakhstan deployment is small in scale and single in scenario, but it provides an observable sample. The role of robot dogs in public safety—whether they are mobile cameras plus loudspeakers, or patrol units capable of independent judgment—depends on subsequent deployment density and the degree of feature openness.

At the Nomad Alemi festival, these few robot dogs first solved two things: transmitting images back and shouting warnings out. What to watch next is whether this model expands from festival activities to daily street patrols, and whether local police will connect the data collected by robot dogs to a larger security network.
