XPeng Opens Humanoid Robot Production Line as Pengxing Raises Over $900M
XPeng Group recently announced the official launch of its automated humanoid robot production line.
The move is one example of automakers racing into the humanoid robot sector, with Li Auto, Chery and others stepping up their own efforts.
The core logic is to transfer the supply chain, application scenarios and technical advantages built up in carmaking to humanoid robots.
Carmakers currently enter the field in three main ways: in-house development, incubating a separate entity, and strategic investment or scenario partnerships.
Within the in-house track, XPeng positions its humanoid robot business as a key vehicle for the group's physical AI strategy.
Pengxing, its humanoid robot subsidiary, has completed a first funding round of more than $900 million at a post-money valuation above $6.3 billion, a high figure among humanoid robot startups.
Spinning Pengxing out to raise money independently is consistent with XPeng's earlier practice.
He Xiaopeng said at a Tsinghua University talk that 98% of the robot team holds master's or doctoral degrees, 18% are PhDs, and more than 100 Tsinghua-affiliated students have joined the project since 2025.
XPeng Group plans to hire more than 8,000 people a year from 2025 to 2027, with about 40% of this year's positions related to physical AI.
