MIIT to Strengthen Core Computing R&D, Explore Space Computing

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has issued the "15th Five-Year Plan for the Development of the Information and Communication Industry," which outlines a comprehensive strategy to elevate the nation's computing power infrastructure.

The plan emphasizes rapid construction of a national integrated computing network, establishing a multilayer facility system spanning hubs, regions, and edges. It also calls for the orderly deployment of AI computing clusters with capacities reaching tens of thousands or even over a hundred thousand accelerator cards, along with on-demand deployment of inference computing facilities tailored to real-world scenarios. A key focus is on accelerating the adoption of domestically produced computing chips to enhance technological self-reliance.

Furthermore, MIIT will strengthen research and application of key common computing technologies and pursue forward-looking exploration of space-based computing power and its ecosystem. The plan highlights the need to deepen automated monitoring and supply-demand matching to boost computing resource utilization. It also commits to refining computing power standards and evaluation systems, and will launch a "computing power foundation" initiative to stimulate breakthroughs.

This strategic move is expected to solidify China's digital infrastructure, supporting the growing demand for artificial intelligence and big data applications across various sectors.
