A humanoid robot's social expressiveness may backfire when it makes mistakes
For robots to be successfully deployed in real-world environments, humans must trust them enough to cooperate with them. Trust is the foundation of effective human-robot interaction, especially in settings where robots assist with critical tasks, such as healthcare, manufacturing, and household chores. Without sufficient trust, users may hesitate to rely on robots, limiting their practical utility.
Roboticists have been exploring various ways to build this trust, including making robots more socially expressive. Socially expressive behaviors—such as gestures, eye contact, nodding, and facial expressions—are designed to make robots appear more natural and relatable. Researchers have often assumed that these behaviors would increase trust, as they mimic human communication patterns and put users at ease.
However, a recent study reveals a potential downside to this approach. The study suggests that social expressiveness may backfire when a robot makes mistakes. While participants initially rated expressive robots as more trustworthy, their trust plummeted more severely after the robot committed an error, compared to when the robot was less expressive. This indicates that users may have higher expectations for robots that appear socially competent, and when those expectations are unmet, the disappointment is greater.
These findings underscore the complexity of human-robot interaction. Designing robots that are both trustworthy and effective requires careful consideration of social cues, not just in isolation but in the context of the robot's performance. As humanoid robots become more prevalent, understanding the interplay between social behavior and task reliability will be crucial for their successful integration into society.
