Top 10 Robotics Stories of September 2026: Humanoids, Acquisitions, and Open Source

September 2026 was a busy month for the robotics industry. Major live events, including IMTS, ROSCon, and iROS, drove a wave of developments in automation and artificial intelligence.

The month's ten most-read stories on The Robot Report reflect that momentum, spanning new products, company launches, and significant structural changes at several robotics firms.

The Robot Report's monthly top 10 ranks the articles that drew the most reader interest over the past month.

Arduino, now a Qualcomm subsidiary, opened pre-orders in September 2026 for VENTUNO Q, an edge AI platform built on the Qualcomm Dragonwing IQ8 Series. The board uses a dual-brain architecture that pairs the processor with a real-time STM32H5 microcontroller.

Arduino designed the board for developers, emphasizing familiarity and ease of use supported by matching software, accessories, and extensions.

Boston Dynamics opened its Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) at Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in September 2026. The Georgia facility serves as both a testbed and a training center for integrating Atlas humanoids directly into Hyundai's automotive manufacturing operations.

The center reflects a broader industry pattern: on the path toward general-purpose automation, developers are training humanoid robots on specific skill sets.

Boston Dynamics has long balanced industrial commercialization with public-facing stunts, from dancing Spot and Atlas robots to appearances at the FIFA World Cup.

Now a Boston Dynamics veteran is launching Dynamic Creatures, a startup focused on creating robotic characters for entertainment. Its co-founders include CEO Marc Theermann and Chief Technology Officer Farbod Farshidian.

Flourish, a startup with offices in San Francisco and Paris, announced plans in September 2026 to sell Flourish One, a Raspberry Pi-powered humanoid aimed at busy parents.

The $3,555 wheeled robot lets early adopters teach it new household chores in under 30 minutes using only a smartphone.

Qualcomm agreed to acquire PickNik Inc., the developer of robotics software including the MoveIt open-source manipulation framework, and said it will keep MoveIt open source.

The companies expect the deal to streamline MoveIt integration with Qualcomm Dragonwing platforms, giving developers an easier path from AI models to planning, manipulation, and real-time control.

Shares of Unitree Robotics, the Hangzhou-based humanoid maker, fell nearly 40% in September 2026 from their first-day closing price on Aug. 19. That decline erased roughly $20 billion in market value from that point and about $35 billion from the stock's peak.

The company's G1 humanoid is priced at $13,500.

Agility Robotics unveiled Digit 5, the newest version of its humanoid robot, as the company awaits a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC).

The update brings more human-like legs, upgraded batteries, and a more comprehensive safety architecture.

Intrinsic released Intrinsic Core in September 2026, an open-source set of Robot Operating System-compatible capabilities for building robotic applications.

The Google unit said the release will let more developers worldwide build with foundational parts of the Intrinsic platform. Intrinsic also released the Open Machine Tending Solution, an open reference design for CNC machine tending.

SoftBank Group has agreed to acquire the Robotics and AI Institute (RAI) from Hyundai Motor Group, according to multiple sources.

The deal had been rumored for a couple of months and is now under review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS).

Agility Robotics said it has deployed its Digit humanoid at nine customer sites as it prepares to go public through a proposed SPAC merger with Churchill Capital Corp. XI.

The Robot Report obtained a first look at the company's financials in September 2026 through a new S-4 filing with the SEC, which reported $1.8 million in revenue.
