Surgical Robot Firm MMI Raises $125M Series D to Fund Alzheimer's Research
Medtech Insight reported on October 9 that Medical Microinstruments (MMI) announced on October 8 the completion of a $125 million Series D financing round. The round was led by existing investor BioStar Capital, with new participation from S3 Ventures, Angelini Ventures, and a strategic investor.
The funds will support the commercial expansion of MMI's Symani robotic system in the United States and key global markets, as well as clinical trials. A portion of the financing is earmarked to fund Alzheimer's disease research, signaling a broader ambition beyond conventional surgical robotics.
Symani has already received FDA clearance and currently has about 50 installed units, with a cumulative total of 3,500 procedures performed. The system is designed to bring microsurgical precision—submillimeter dexterity—to procedures that demand extreme accuracy, such as reconstructive and neurosurgery.
By applying that precision to Alzheimer's research, MMI suggests its robotics platform may play a role in studying or treating neurodegenerative conditions. The investment reflects continued confidence in surgical robotics, particularly in high-acuity niches where human hands face limitations. As MMI scales manufacturing and clinical evidence, the company aims to establish Symani as a standard tool in microsurgery. The Alzheimer's component remains early-stage, but it highlights how robotic platforms are increasingly viewed as research instruments as well as therapeutic devices. The round underscores growing interest in robotics that extend human capabilities in delicate procedures, and MMI's progress will be watched closely by both medtech investors and neuroscience researchers.
