JD.com Enters Home Kitchen with AI Meal Plans and 19,888-Yuan Cooking Robot

After the delivery war quieted, JD.com is escalating its food-related internet battle. On Sept 16, JD.com announced a new local-life business, 7Fresh Chef. Dada Chairman Guo Qing, a key operator behind JD.com's delivery push, made a rare appearance to support the launch.

JD.com has already rolled out 7Fresh Kitchen delivery coverage, a standalone JD.com delivery app, JD.com Reviews, JD.com True Ranking and 7Fresh Coffee. Now 7Fresh is aiming at the home-kitchen scenario.

In the 7Fresh Chef model, the workflow is straightforward: AI drafts meal plans, riders deliver pre-prepped vegetables, and a robot cooks. Users upload health reports and dietary preferences via the 7Fresh Chef mini-program. The AI then generates phased meal plans, while JD.com full-time riders deliver cold-chain prepped ingredients on schedule, and an intelligent cooking robot prepares the dishes.

The launch price is 19,888 yuan, including the robot and 15,000 Chef Coins, which can be used to buy designated prepped vegetables and related services. Hardware and AI services are more like vehicles for subscriptions. The opportunity lies in the closed loop: 7Fresh Chef can link meal plans, ingredient delivery and smart cooking devices, extending dining consumption into the home and creating full-population coverage with 7Fresh Kitchen. That complete chain from decision to execution is something smart kitchen appliance and health app brands have not had.

But a complete loop does not equal a viable business model. Zhuang Shuai, founder of Bailian Consulting, says the nearly 20,000-yuan launch price is a high decision threshold for ordinary families. The core test is whether fulfillment costs for the prepped-vegetable supply chain, plus labor and equipment costs for home cooking, can support the subscription model's unit economics. Pan Helin, a member of MIIT's Information and Communication Economic Expert Committee, says demand is still being cultivated, especially for smart cooking robots. Recipes are easy to obtain, but whether robots are good enough and whether users will pay a long-term premium for convenience remains unknown. In the short term, JD.com's main goal is to use device sales to drive its prepped-vegetable delivery business, but that market is highly competitive and incremental growth may be limited.

Hardware sets the stage, but supply chain makes it run. 7Fresh Chef uses hardware as a platform, yet the system depends on JD.com's supply chain. If prepped-vegetable delivery cannot generate stable repeat purchases, the hardware may become a one-time sale.

The emergence of 7Fresh Chef may not be an isolated business move but a footnote to a shift in local-life competition. After the delivery war, Meituan, Alibaba and JD.com are all turning to supply restructuring, scenario segmentation and technology-driven value competition. In non-food instant retail, Alibaba is accelerating integration of Hema and Tmall Supermarket, developing non-restaurant instant retail and front warehouses. Meituan previously planned to acquire Dingdong Maicai to strengthen its front-warehouse barrier. JD.com is increasing investment in Miaosong front warehouses while offering 7Fresh Chef as its answer for home scenarios.

Zhuang Shuai believes the new competition focuses on service, efficiency and ecosystem, including supply-chain integration, fulfillment efficiency, AI empowerment and expansion into non-food categories. Pan Helin adds that for a long time, local-life competition will still center on delivery and fresh food market share. Fresh food share fluctuates widely because product quality varies and is unstable, making consumer repeat purchases unstable. JD.com's entry into the home kitchen is a logical extension of this trend, but how much surprise the initial attempt brings and what pain points the smart meal system will face still need full market validation.
