Figure's 30-Home Zero-Shot Run; First Live Humanoid Surgery
Figure reported Helix 2.5 following a test across 30 rented homes in the Bay Area, where robots began useful work on arrival without additional training. In parallel, a UC San Diego team documented in Nature two teleoperated humanoids performing laparoscopic gallbladder removal, the first recorded live-surgery use of the form factor.
The two results relieve different bottlenecks. The home test turns on sample scale and task validity under zero-shot transfer, while the surgical case fixes near-term value in teleoperation rather than autonomous decision-making. A Beijing patient with spinal cord injury controlling a robot 1,000 km away in Shanghai through a NEO brain-computer interface draws on the same remote-control stack, indicating that remote embodied control is maturing along several tracks at once.
Supply-side evidence is firmer. D-Robotics closed a $400 million Series C led by Mirae Asset, its third round this year, with cumulative chip shipments at 8 million units. Arm launched Total Design for Physical AI with more than 80 partners and a six-level robotics classification, and Tesla's audit team reached Ningbo on Sept. 16, starting supplier inspections on Sept. 17 to assess Optimus volume capacity.
Difficulty remains priced high. XPeng chairman He Xiaopeng put robot development at roughly 20 times that of cars, with capability gains expected once mass production starts around the fourth quarter. Agility's redesign of the Digit 5 leg for low squatting and heavy lifting indicates hardware is still being reworked for load handling.
Two observation points follow. First, whether zero-shot performance in 30 homes extends to longer-tail households and converts into paid contracts; AGIBOT's A3 Ultra, already in paid hotel, dealership, supermarket and metro-inspection deployments, offers a comparison. Second, whether 8-million-unit chip volumes and supplier audits translate into lower bill-of-materials cost in 2027.
