From Stage to Production Line: China's Humanoid Robot Industry Hits Mass Production Turning Point
In September 2026, XPeng Motors launched an automated production line for its humanoid robot IRON in Guangzhou, targeting mass production by the end of the year. The move represents the first time a Chinese automaker has transferred its automotive quality management system to robot manufacturing.
At the inauguration ceremony, XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng said the line was built "from scratch, with no precedent to follow."
XPeng is not alone in this push. According to Vice Minister of Industry and Information Technology Zhang Yunming, China now has more than 140 humanoid robot manufacturers, with over 330 products released in the past year. Data from Omdia shows that Chinese companies accounted for nearly 80% of global humanoid robot shipments in 2025, with Zhiyuan Robotics leading at 5,168 units delivered and Unitree Technology following with a 32% share.
This landscape is closely tied to China's supply chain advantages in electronics and machinery manufacturing. Li Junlan, research manager for IDC China's robotics division, noted that Chinese manufacturers can quickly integrate cutting-edge algorithms into hardware products. This efficient conversion from design to mass production has given them a first-mover advantage in the emerging market.
In terms of technical metrics, Chinese companies are also iterating rapidly. Unitree's new humanoid robot, released in August, achieved a 2-meter vertical jump and a running speed of 12.66 meters per second, both surpassing human records. Tech analyst Ma Jihua believes such extreme performance tests are essentially stress tests of a robot's software-hardware coordination, helping to define system performance boundaries.
The capital market has responded even more directly. According to IT Juzi, investment events in China's humanoid robot sector surged from 103 in the previous year to 325 in 2025, with total financing reaching 39.8 billion yuan, more than tripling year-on-year. The momentum continued into 2026, with 18 related stocks receiving net inflows exceeding 100 million yuan in the first 20 days of January alone.
Policy support has also been intensive. In February 2026, MIIT released the first standards system covering the entire humanoid robot industry chain. In June, MIIT and SASAC jointly launched a real-world training initiative, requiring 10 provinces and municipalities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong to implement at least 20 real-world operation scenarios within the year. Hangzhou became the first city in China to introduce local regulations for the embodied intelligence robot industry, exploring a "sandbox regulatory" model.
However, concerns loom beneath the boom. Wang Peng, associate researcher at the Beijing Academy of Social Sciences, pointed out that among the more than 150 domestic humanoid robot companies, over half are startups or cross-industry entrants. A large amount of resources is concentrated on surface-level functions such as basic walking and performance demonstrations, while research space for core technologies is squeezed. He suggested accelerating the establishment of unified industry standards and entry-exit mechanisms to avoid low-end duplication and price wars.
In terms of actual factory applications, the value of humanoid robots is still being validated. The G2 industrial robot produced by Juzhi Future, a subsidiary of Juzhi Intelligence, has been deployed in 3C electronics and automotive production lines, improving the production cycle for safety belt component tapping from 18 seconds to 12.9 seconds. But such cases remain rare; most humanoid robots have yet to enter real industrial operation scenarios.
The launch of XPeng's IRON production line may offer a reference sample for the industry: grafting a mature automotive manufacturing system onto robot production to reduce costs through economies of scale. Yet as Electrek noted in its report, "a robot rolling off the production line does not equal mass production." From line startup to true commercial delivery, China's humanoid robot industry still has a way to go.
