Terminator-Style Robot Wins Cage Fight, but a Human Was Controlling It
A 44-second video shows internet personality Frankie LaPenna stepping into an octagon cage to face a humanoid robot roughly six feet tall. The matchup was staged by REK, a San Francisco robotics company, which describes it as the first human-versus-humanoid robot fight.
Wearing protective padding, LaPenna advances on the machine and throws punches. The robot answers with a flurry of kicks and strikes, the final blow sending him across the cage.
The robot was given a Terminator-style look, including a head designed to appear menacing.
The robot was not acting on its own. It is the EngineAI T800, a full-size humanoid platform built by the Chinese robotics company EngineAI. The fight took place in San Francisco on September 18.
There was one important caveat: the robot did not decide how to fight. The T800 was remotely controlled by a human operator.
That changes what the performance actually demonstrates. Its significance shifts away from artificial intelligence learning mixed martial arts and toward a display of what a humanoid body can physically do under teleoperation.
The distinction matters, because a teleoperated machine can carry out actions that would require far more complex autonomous control to achieve on its own.
It also means the event did not prove that a humanoid can independently identify an opponent, choose fighting techniques and carry them out in real time. What it did show is more basic, yet still striking: a human-controlled humanoid can move through an enclosed space and deliver physical blows to a human opponent.
On the authenticity of the bout, LaPenna appeared to struggle to land meaningful strikes, and he questioned whether the robot's ability to knock him back several meters was as straightforward as the video makes it look. He is a performer known for physical comedy and stunts.
REK promoted the matchup as a real fight rather than a purely choreographed demonstration, but the short clip does not supply enough information to independently confirm how the bout was conducted or how much force was involved.
The event appears to be part of a wider REK effort to turn teleoperated humanoids into combat entertainment. The company has previously organized robot-versus-robot fighting events.
China hosted a large humanoid robot fighting championship in July, in which robots faced off inside a cage and were assessed on striking, stability, defensive moves and durability. The human-versus-robot matchup pushes that concept one step further.
