Agility Unveils Digit 5 Humanoid With New Legs, Batteries and Safety Upgrades
Agility Robotics unveiled Digit 5, the newest version of its humanoid robot, as the company prepares to go public through a proposed SPAC merger with Churchill Capital Corp. XI.
Digit 5 adds new legs, upgraded batteries and a broader safety architecture. Agility told The Robot Report the robot can work near people without physical safety barriers.
CEO Peggy Johnson said Digit 5 "is removing a major barrier to scaling humanoid robots in industrial environments," adding that it was built to customer requirements after three years of Digit 4 on production floors.
SEC filings show Agility generated $1.8 million in net sales in 2025, and the SPAC values it at $2.5 billion. Early access to Digit 5 is expected in the first half of 2027, with general availability for manufacturing, warehouse and distribution operators by the end of 2027.
The company also plans its first commercial deployments outside North America, starting with the EU and UK, and expects Digit 5 to carry a CE mark and other regulatory marks.
Digit is one of the few humanoid robots working in manufacturing, distribution and logistics. Co-founder and chief robot officer Jonathan Hurst said earlier versions belonged to a proof-of-concept phase.
Hurst recalled an eye-opening moment early in work with Amazon: the robot moved bins off a putwall and completed the task, prompting the team to ask whether it could scale.
That question exposed FCC requirements, UL and ISO certifications and other deployment realities — doing the task alone was not enough to deploy robots at scale.
Hurst said the team began learning what the real blockers were, then used knowledge of 10 roadmap use cases and deep customer input to ask what a robot absolutely needs to achieve them.
Those requirements extend beyond safety standards to logistics — aisle widths, where chargers can be bolted down, workflow design. Agility says such constraints become hundreds of engineering requirements, the foundation of Digit 5's design.
Some changes appear in hardware. Digit 5 runs 90 minutes and charges fully in nine — a 10:1 run-to-charge ratio, up from Digit 4's 2:1 — supporting more than 20 hours of work in a 24-hour day.
Digit 4 focused largely on tote-based material handling. Digit 5 adds manipulation skills across a facility's workflow: depalletizing inbound goods, machine tending, kitting and sequencing, quality inspection and palletizing outbound shipments.
One of the most visible changes is the legs. Agility replaced the ostrich-like backward knees with more human-like legs.
Hurst said the old configuration optimized walking and running, while the new one optimizes lifting and repeatedly getting up off the ground. Proprietary cycloidal actuators let Digit 5 lift up to 50 lb (22.7 kg), covering single-person lift tasks in OSHA-regulated facilities.
Hurst said requirements drove the design toward lifting, yielding a more humanoid look, though Agility is not copying humans or animals.
