EngineAI T800 Kicks Human Fighter Down in San Francisco Cage Bout

On September 20 local time, a T800 humanoid robot built by the Chinese company EngineAI stepped into the octagon at the REK robot combat event in San Francisco, marking the machine's first bout against a human boxer.

Footage from the cage shows the robot fitted with a head modelled on the T-800 from the Terminator films. A single heavy kick sent Frankie LaPenna — an influencer boxer wearing a full set of protective gear — to the canvas, handing the robot the victory.

REK is a humanoid combat series staged in the United States. Its usual format pits two robots against each other, and its stated ambition is to become a real-life version of the film Real Steel. Putting a human into that format made this card an unusually strong draw.

Reports of the bout surfaced on September 24, and the clip of the knockdown circulated widely online in the days that followed.

It should be noted that the fight was not conducted by fully autonomous AI. An operator wearing a VR headset and holding motion controllers drove the robot remotely, while the machine itself was responsible for dynamic balance and posture correction.

That division of labour mirrors the earlier robot combat event in Shenzhen. The decision to throw a kick came from a human in the back end; the robot's job was to execute the movement and stay upright through the impact. The intelligence on display was therefore largely human, with the machine contributing physical execution and stability.

On September 23, REK also presented a robot styled after the Predator, and LaPenna was once again on the receiving end.

Early in that bout, the human fighter held the upper hand and knocked the robot to the ground. The machine recovered quickly, however, and felled the human with a combination of punches, striking a flamboyant pose once the win was secured.
