Xiaomi's YareLampGo combines robotic arm and AI in an open-source desk lamp
On September 21, Xiaomi's AI hardware team introduced YareLampGo, an exploratory robotic arm desk lamp that integrates mechanical arms and AI interaction. It is not just a simple lighting device; it can understand voice commands and perform various physical movements. The entire hardware and code have been open-sourced.
Ordinary desk lamps require manual adjustment of the lamp head, but this product is equipped with a multi-axis robotic arm, allowing the lamp head to rotate, pitch, and swing freely. Upon receiving voice commands, the robotic arm directs the lamp head to the corresponding direction, and the light moves accordingly. Users can adjust the lighting angle by speaking without using their hands. This design breaks away from the static adjustment of traditional lamps, giving the lighting device a dynamic response capability.
The debut of YareLampGo showcases Xiaomi's exploration direction in AI hardware, namely integrating robotics into everyday home products. The open-source release includes both hardware design and software code, allowing developers to replicate or modify the project. This is part of a growing trend where everyday objects gain robotic capabilities.
The lamp lacks a screen; interaction is entirely through microphones, speakers, and the robotic arm's physical movements. When spoken to, the lamp not only responds verbally but also shakes its head and swings its arm to express feedback through body language. This non-screen interaction makes the lamp feel more like a living companion.
This interaction design corresponds to a fundamental proposition in embodied AI: when a device has a physical body, its response methods are no longer limited to screens and sound; movement itself can become part of expression. The lamp's robotic arm functions to translate voice commands into physical postures, and users can judge whether it has understood and what it is doing by the orientation and swinging of the lamp head. The responses are not just functional but also expressive, using movement to convey understanding. The combination of voice and motion creates a richer interaction experience compared to voice-only assistants.
This is an attempt at embodied AI in consumer hardware, enhancing the naturalness of human-machine interaction through body language. Traditional smart lamps can only be controlled via voice or app for on/off and brightness, while YareLampGo adds a physical action dimension, making feedback more intuitive.
