Humanoid Robots Enter Construction to Reshape Housing Production

Humanoid robots are beginning to appear in residential factories, signaling a shift in construction production methods. South Korean industrial AI company BigWave Robotics has announced a partnership with modular housing manufacturer Space Factory to gradually deploy humanoid robots in the housing manufacturing process starting in 2026.

This collaboration represents more than just adding an automated production line. It marks the entry of robotics into a complex industry that has long relied on manual expertise and experience.

Robots have traditionally been used in highly standardized fields such as automotive manufacturing and electronics assembly, where production processes are fixed and component specifications are uniform, making them suitable for repetitive work by conventional industrial robots. Construction, however, involves many non-standard tasks—such as material handling, on-site installation, and operations in complex environments—making automation far more difficult than in typical manufacturing. For this reason, the arrival of humanoid robots is regarded as an important move to find new application scenarios for the robotics industry.

BigWave Robotics has chosen a modular housing factory as its entry point, beginning with the automation of insulation installation. Materials like fiberglass are irregular in shape and require handling in a challenging environment, which has made precise processing difficult with conventional machinery. Moreover, these materials can affect workers' skin and respiratory systems. Humanoid robots equipped with visual recognition, environmental sensing, and flexible manipulation can reduce the reliance on human workers for high-risk positions and improve production stability.

From an industry perspective, construction is becoming a new entry point for artificial intelligence technologies. According to United Nations reports, global urbanization continues to progress, and rising demand for housing puts pressure on traditional construction models. The sector also faces long-standing challenges such as labor shortages and difficulties in raising productivity. Modular housing, which uses factory prefabrication and on-site assembly, has become an important way to speed up homebuilding, and the addition of robotic technology is further pushing this model toward smart manufacturing.

Compared with conventional building automation, the greatest advantage of humanoid robots lies in their ability to operate in environments designed for humans. Construction factories and job sites are typically arranged around human working habits, including tool dimensions, operating heights, and spatial layouts. Unlike fixed mechanical arms, humanoid robots can theoretically enter existing settings directly and perform tasks without major retrofitting of production facilities. This is a key reason why global technology companies have been accelerating their humanoid robot initiatives in recent years.

Currently, several countries—including the United States, Germany, Japan, and China—are promoting the development of the humanoid robot industry. American companies are using AI models to enhance robots' autonomous decision-making abilities, Japanese companies are focusing on applications in the context of an aging population, and China continues to invest in smart manufacturing and industrial robotics. Data from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) shows that the number of industrial robots installed worldwide has continued to grow in recent years, indicating strong demand for manufacturing automation. Whether humanoid robots can enter more sectors in the future will depend critically on cost, reliability, and actual work efficiency.

BigWave Robotics' move into construction also reflects a shift in the commercialization path of robot companies. In the past, humanoid robots were often seen as technology showcase products; today, companies are seeking application scenarios that can generate real economic value. From manufacturing plants to residential production lines, robot firms are accumulating data through real working environments and using that data to optimize algorithms and improve robot adaptability.

It is worth noting that the entry of humanoid robots into construction does not mean they will completely replace human workers. Building production involves design adjustments, quality management, safety supervision, and many other stages, so a large number of professionals will still be needed in the short term. A more realistic direction is for robots to take over high-risk, repetitive, and physically demanding tasks, while humans handle complex decision-making and system management, forming a new collaborative model.

For the modular housing industry, the value of robots lies not only in reducing labor costs but also in raising the level of production standardization. Traditional construction is easily influenced by weather, worker skills, and site management; factory-based production combined with intelligent robots can increase manufacturing precision and shorten delivery cycles. This has positive implications for easing housing supply pressure and promoting green building development.

Furthermore, BigWave Robotics is currently pursuing a listing on Korea's KOSDAQ, a path that reflects capital market interest in the physical AI sector. According to the company's disclosures, its humanoid robot business has already contributed some sales revenue and has gained recognition from clients in heavy industry and automotive parts. Although humanoid robots are still at an early stage of industrialization and their profit models have yet to be validated, their expansion from manufacturing into construction indicates that companies are attempting to break free from single-application limitations.

In the future, as AI models, sensor technology, and robot hardware continue to mature, humanoid robots may enter more non-standardized industries, including logistics, energy maintenance, and public facility management. The construction industry is only one starting point in this round of industrial transformation.

The partnership between BigWave Robotics and Space Factory sends a clear signal: competition in the robot industry is no longer limited to who can build machines that look more human, but rather who can make robots genuinely integrate into production systems and create value. The next phase of smart manufacturing may not be about increasing the number of robots in factories, but about robots becoming important participants in production processes across various industries.
