Tokyo's MW Mounts Robot Arms on Ceilings, Eyes 10,000 Robotic Homes a Year
While global tech firms race to put bipedal humanoid robots in living rooms, Tokyo-based MW is heading the other way. The company embeds robotic arms directly into homes, mounting them on ceiling tracks rather than having them walk on the floor.
MW's approach rests on three pillars: custom home construction, integrated hardware called MW bot, and a software operating system called MW Intelligence. CEO Shuzo Narita has set a target of a Tokyo debut in 2028 and annual production of 10,000 robot-equipped homes by 2035.
If achieved, that would represent roughly 5% of Japan's current new-housing market, moving automated homes from a niche luxury toward a mainstream standard.
Humanoid robots entering the living room run into space and safety constraints first. Laboratory environments are tidy; real homes are not. Japanese homes are typically compact, and bulky bipedal robots struggle to navigate around furniture, pets, and children.
A more practical problem: simply staying balanced and handling unexpected obstacles consumes huge amounts of computing power that could otherwise go toward doing chores. MW is betting that wall- and ceiling-mounted machines can handle housework more easily.
The newly unveiled ceiling-mounted system relies on two robotic arms with claw-like hands running along overhead tracks, handling tasks such as moving groceries and folding laundry. In a demonstration at Tokyo's Toyosu waterfront, the robot correctly separated pantry items like soy sauce from goods needing refrigeration, and pulled a towel from the dryer and folded it neatly. But when it came to folding a T-shirt, it got stuck.
