Turning an AI Robot into a Moving Vase: A Speculative Design on Attention
At the 2026 IFA trade show in Berlin, robots competed in showcasing ever-stronger computing power, more flexible movements, and richer functionalities. Yet the Paris-based design duo Batten & Kamp presented a starkly different creation—'Beauty Seeker'—which merges an embodied AI hexapod robot with a live orchid, yielding an unconventional moving vase.
This piece deliberately challenges mainstream technological narratives. The designers stripped the robot of its built-in cameras and various functional modules, drastically reducing its technical capabilities. Their aim is to probe a more fundamental question: when a high-tech robot becomes a simple vessel, what does its presence among us in a domestic setting signify?
The robot retains only one essential behavior: using LIDAR to track nearby people and slowly moving its body, adjusting angles to guide their gaze toward the orchid it carries. The designers see this as creating a sense of absurdity—a highly advanced robotic platform whose purpose is not to serve humans or perform tricks, but to serve as a mobile pedestal for a flower.
Interestingly, this functional limitation reduces the typical sense of threat robots often evoke. A hexapod, with its spider- or scorpion-like form, naturally triggers instinctive wariness in a home—yet here it does nothing but hold a flower, attempting to catch a glance. This paradox creates a peculiar tension: you know it could be powerful, but it chooses to be a vase.
This contradiction is not new for Batten & Kamp. As early as 2023, in 'Comfort Seeker', they placed an iconic Eames chair on a quadruped robot, exploring possibilities of merging furniture with autonomous mobility. Those projects laid the methodological groundwork for 'Beauty Seeker': juxtaposing familiar household objects with unfamiliar robotic forms to provoke thought at the boundaries between technology and human life.
At a deeper level, 'Beauty Seeker' extends the duo's ongoing inquiry into the relationship between technology and nature. The orchid itself is a natural machine that evolved over millions of years to attract insect pollinators; cultivated varieties are products of artificial breeding. Now, an AI-driven robot competes for human attention, trying to make this flower be seen.
The designers aim to shift the focus from 'what robots can do' to 'what robots should do'—when algorithms and smart devices constantly vie for our visual attention, perhaps teaching them to 'step back'—simply holding a flower and slowly circling around—is the rarest behavior of all.
