Unitree Releases Dex5-S Dexterous Hand With 22 DOF, Priced From 39,900 Yuan
Unitree has officially released its new dexterous hand, the Dex5-S, which is designed at a 1:1 scale with the human hand. Through a high-degree-of-freedom mechanical structure and a precise control system, the product is intended to improve a robot's ability to carry out complex, fine-grained work.
The Dex5-S offers 22 degrees of freedom, with a highly biomimetic layout. The thumb and the little finger each have 5 degrees of freedom, while the index, middle and ring fingers each have 4.
The little finger also gains a new Roll degree of freedom, which Unitree says further improves finger dexterity and the hand's range of motion during manipulation.
In terms of size, the Dex5-S measures 102 x 187 x 26 millimeters and weighs 620 grams, with an aluminum alloy shell that balances durability against weight.
For actuation and control, the hand integrates 22 motors and supports both direct and reverse driving, using a dual-encoder control scheme. It accepts a wide 15V to 65V power supply and reaches a peak power of 200W, with a single-hand payload of 1 kilogram and a maximum load of 2 kilograms.
To meet high real-time control requirements, the Dex5-S provides three communication interfaces: gigabit Ethernet, USB and high-speed 485. Its maximum baud rate reaches 6 Mbps, and control frequency can reach up to 1000Hz over Ethernet or USB.
Under a gigabit Ethernet configuration, the hand can connect directly to a palm camera without extra wiring, simplifying integration of the vision system. That palm camera addresses the need for close-range visual information when the hand grasps an object, since hand-eye coordination is the basis of fine manipulation.
Besides the standard version, the Dex5-S series includes a Dex5-S Pro version, with prices starting at 39,900 yuan. The combination of high degrees of freedom, high control frequency and integrated vision interfaces is meant to improve the hand's performance in embodied intelligence scenarios, particularly industrial and research tasks that demand precise operation.
The dexterous hand is a key component for robots to achieve fine manipulation. Unitree had previously built up experience in humanoid robot bodies and motion control, and this release fills in the manipulation side of that capability. At 39,900 yuan, the starting price sits in the mid-to-upper range for the dexterous hand category, reflecting a certain level of performance specification and reliability requirements.
