Light Rare Earth Prices Rise Sharply as Supply-Demand Dynamics Shift
Light rare earths, the core raw material for neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets, are strategic minerals vital to new quality productive forces such as new energy vehicles, wind power, and industrial robots. Their applications span drive motors, wind turbines, and servo motors, underscoring their growing strategic value in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Since mid-September, the light rare earth market has seen praseodymium-neodymium (PrNd) leading gains while other varieties remained flat. According to SMM data, on September 22, PrNd oxide rose 5,000 yuan per ton in a single day, and PrNd metal increased by 7,500 yuan per ton. On September 23, prices slightly corrected but stayed at recent highs, indicating market strength. This upward trend marks a notable shift in the rare earth market.
Yang Jiawen, a rare earth industry analyst at SMM, attributed the price increase mainly to reduced low-priced spot resources and firm quotes from upstream smelters. The rally reflects changing supply-demand dynamics, and market attention is rising. The price increase could have implications for downstream magnet manufacturers. Market participants are closely monitoring the situation. Overall, the shift in supply-demand fundamentals is pushing light rare earth prices into an upward channel, with future trends worth watching for the time being.
