Agility's Digit 5 Steps Back from Humans, a Key Step for Humanoids in Factories

Gizmodo's Mike Pearl offered a blunt observation: at last, flesh and blood is getting the respect it deserves. His neighborhood has many delivery robots, and he often has to move even an inch to let them pass. In his view, if robots must appear, the ideal is for them to be completely unobtrusive.

Agility Robotics' new Digit 5 humanoid is moving in that direction. It may be the first humanoid programmed to actively avoid getting in people's way. In a video, it lowers its head when encountering a person, appearing to signal deference.

Agility CTO Pras Velagapudi told Ars Technica that Digit 5 uses a complex safety motion system that can take different mitigation actions depending on the type of human presence detected. According to Agility's Sept. 15 press release, the robot uses proprietary AI algorithms and multiple sensor technologies to continuously monitor people and autonomously avoid, stop, or take a seated posture. The logic is not simple obstacle avoidance but context-graded response. If someone approaches, it can route around them; if distance is too close, it can stop; in certain scenarios, it can sit down to reduce its presence. These three responses map to different risk levels and are more flexible than a single emergency stop.

Agility says its devices have logged over 65,000 hours of operation and commercial deployment, a central proof point for customers. The company also frequently cites OSHA, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. In November, an early version of Digit underwent a safety test that Agility says OSHA recognized. That endorsement matters to industrial customers because when factories procure humanoids, insurers and safety compliance departments often have more say than technical specs.

Today, it is not uncommon for workplace robots to be isolated in cages with complex multi-step lockout and shutdown procedures. Traditional industrial robots are powerful and fast, so the safety strategy is physical separation. For humanoids to share aisles and collaborate with people in factories, that physical barrier must be removed. What ensures safety after removal is an industry-wide unsolved problem. Social media is full of videos of humanoid robots hurting people. Unitree's dance and martial arts performances draw attention but also show what can happen when a high-speed robot loses control. Agility CEO Peggy Johnson said in the press release that her company is removing a major barrier to large-scale humanoid adoption in industrial environments. That barrier is safety trust.

Digit 5's specifications include 90 minutes of battery life, the ability to lift 50 pounds (about 23 kg), and reach shelves up to 7.2 feet (about 2.2 meters). These specs match typical warehouse and logistics tasks: moving boxes, stocking shelves, and navigating aisles. Its retreat or stop when encountering people may look minor, but such details determine whether factory supervisors will let humanoids out of safety cages. Agility making the safety motion system a core selling point shows it understands that the industry's threshold is not how heavy a box the robot can lift, but whether nearby workers feel safe.
