Toyota's 400,000-Humanoid Plan Sets the Day's Scale Benchmark
Toyota disclosed a plan to deploy 400,000 ELEY humanoids globally by 2028, with 150,000 inside Toyota and 250,000 across group firms, backed by roughly 1 trillion yen in annual investment. At that volume the program sets a capital-expenditure benchmark against which other automaker robotics commitments will be measured. It also implies a supply requirement no current humanoid vendor has demonstrated at scale.
Supply is probing two directions at once. Unitree priced its GD01 manned transforming mech at 3.9 million yuan with no disclosed sales, while Lingze Dynamics listed its full-size bionic humanoid Bianxiao Xiaoling at 26,800 yuan at the Digital Trade Expo. The two price points sit at opposite ends of a market where form factor and willingness to pay remain unsettled; Unitree founder Wang Xingxing's position that large robots are inevitable is a strategic bet, not a validated demand signal.
Manufacturing and safety capacity are being addressed in parallel. Amazon committed $100 million to an Indianapolis robot plant with about 500 jobs and production from 2027, deepening its in-house supply chain. Agility's Digit 5 crouches, stops and cuts motor power when people approach, removing fencing requirements in close-proximity work and moving the binding constraint from hardware to safety certification.
Demand is widening beyond factory floors. IndexBox forecasts 16.8% growth for AI surgical robots by 2035, driven mainly by global surgeon shortages, a structural gap rather than a pilot-cycle effect. Ukraine's former defense minister Fedorov launched a Robot Army initiative targeting humanoid and autonomous systems for high-risk missions within six months, an explicit government route to fielding the technology.
Two observation points follow. Disclosed investment now runs well ahead of disclosed orders, so delivery data from Toyota and Amazon in 2027 and 2028 will be the first real test of the industrial base. Proximity safety design of the Digit 5 type is likely to become the baseline regulators and buyers adopt for collaborative deployment.
