The Italian Institute of Technology (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, IIT), founded in 2004, is Italy's leading center for advanced applied scientific and technological research, directly overseen by the Italian Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Science and Technology, with a total staff of approximately 1,500 people.

IIT's robotics research holds a world-leading position, focusing on multidisciplinary robot design and control, as well as the development and application of robot-related software and hardware platforms.

Its most renowned robotics achievements include the humanoid robot iCub and the legged robotic platform HyQ.

IIT has also developed series elastic actuator technology, which has been commercialized through the company Alberobotics.

In 2016, IIT was listed by *Nature* magazine among the world's top 50 rising-star scientific research institutes.
