Key facts

Founded in January 2025, when it published its founding post, and headquartered in San Francisco. The team combines AI researchers, roboticists, software and electronics engineers. Shumo Chu is co-founder and CEO alongside co-founders Haichen Shen and Hongming Luo. The company joined NVIDIA Inception in July 2026. Its stated premise is that robot capability is limited by data quality, which is why it builds the devices, the perception stack and the training data pipeline itself. TMTPost reported in October 2026 that the company also runs a domestic R&D center in Suzhou, China, and plans to extend the line to motion-capture gloves, multi-camera rigs and robotic grippers.

GI Ego1 is a stereo head-mounted capture device with dual 1080p cameras at a 63 mm baseline matched to human IPD, a 9-DoF IMU at 200 Hz, hardware synchronization between cameras and IMU, and time-aligned output in a single .mcap file. GI EGO1GS moves to 157 degree global-shutter stereo cameras, a 400 Hz IMU and stereo audio sharing one hardware clock, running the EgoHand detector on device in real time; the headset weighs about 200 g and offloads over microSD, Wi-Fi or USB. The Visio Companion app handles pairing, recording, stereo calibration and repair tickets. On the data side the stack converts raw stereo footage into metric head trajectories, 3D hand motion and dense depth for VLA fine-tuning.

Market position

GI Labs positions itself as a data supplier for robot learning and VLA training, working with research labs and teams that collect at scale. Its public writing compares egocentric capture hardware against Meta Project Aria Gen 2, Quest 3S and Pico 4 Ultra, which is where its technical visibility comes from. The company is still small, with a team in the single digits to low teens by public account, and has not disclosed revenue.
